How to choose the right mat: a practical guide

Choosing the right mat is essential for getting off to a good start with Pilates. I am often asked what features to consider and how to navigate the many options available on the market. After years of teaching experience, I have learned that the right mat can make the difference between an effective and comfortable practice and a frustrating session.

Pilates is a discipline that requires precision and control: every movement is performed with awareness, and our mat must support us in this journey. Unlike yoga, where very thin mats are often sought after for certain positions, in Pilates we have specific needs related to floor exercises and work on the spine.

“What happens on the mat, changes what happens off the mat.”

Fundamental Specifics

The ideal thickness for Pilates is between 6 and 10 mm. A mat that is too thin does not provide sufficient support for the spine, while one that is too thick can compromise balance in standing exercises.

The material must ensure grip and stability. TPE or NBR offer excellent value for money, while natural cork is perfect for those looking for an eco-friendly solution.

Suggestions

For beginners, we recommend an 8mm TPE mat with a non-slip surface. This choice allows you to perform all the basic exercises correctly while maintaining the right level of comfort.
